His ancestors came from Safenwil, a region in the Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. The original spelling of their family name was Hilfiker, but it was changed to an Americanized version after they immigrated to the U.S.

In the 1970s, Hilfiger initiated his career by co-establishing a series of denim and fashion shops called People’s Place in upstate New York.

In the 1980s, he began creating stylish clothing for men under his own name. The business later expanded to include women’s clothing and luxury items like fragrances, and it became a publicly traded company in 1992.

He has received an impressive number of awards, including two from the Council of Fashion Designers of America: Menswear Designer of the Year in 1995 and the esteemed Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

He actively participates in charitable endeavors and supports organizations like Autism Speaks and the MLK Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation. Additionally, he has been a member of the board of directors for The Fresh Air Fund, a non-profit organization based in New York that enables disadvantaged children to experience summer camp. As a tribute to Hilfiger’s generous contributions, The Fresh Air Fund renamed their Camp Pioneer program to Camp Tommy in 1999.

In 2012, The Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation rebranded all of its philanthropic efforts as “Tommy Cares.” This new global initiative aims to enhance the brand’s involvement in non-profit partnerships, charitable donations, and employee engagement.

Tommy Cares remains committed to supporting various organizations on a global level, including Save the Children, the World Wildlife Fund, War Child, and Millennium Promise.

In 2016, Hilfiger released his autobiography titled American Dreamer: My Life in Fashion & Business, a New York Times Best Seller he co-wrote with Peter Knobler. He is quoted as saying “[The book is] a roadmap of the moments that have defined both my [40-year fashion career] and my personal life.” It delves into his upbringing, entrepreneurial beginnings, and his subsequent foray into the world of fashion.

Hilfiger launched the People’s Place Program in 2020 as a response to the Black Lives Matter movement. This platform aims to support black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in the fashion industry and other sectors. The program is named after Hilfiger’s initial retail venture.
